Groundwater Hydrogeology

Groundwater is central to Montana’s communities, industries, and natural resources. At HydroSolutions, we help clients understand and manage groundwater through clear, defensible investigations and analysis. With decades of experience in Montana, our team delivers services ranging from public water supply development to aquifer testing, modeling, investigations, and technical support for permitting and water rights.

Providing Hydrogeology Services Since 1999

What We Offer

HydroSolutions’ hydrogeologists provide a full range of groundwater and hydrogeologic services. Whether developing new municipal water supplies, investigating site-specific groundwater issues, or supporting regulatory permitting, we focus on delivering the technical information agencies and clients require.

Montana Expertise & Regulatory Knowledge

HydroSolutions has provided hydrogeology services to clients across Montana since 1999. Our team combines decades of experience with local knowledge of the state’s aquifers, geology, and regulatory landscape. We maintain strong working relationships with DNRC, DEQ, and other agencies, and we bring both technical rigor and practical insight to help clients move projects forward with confidence.

Hydrologic Investigations for Property & Infrastructure

Groundwater and surface-water conditions can directly affect development, infrastructure, and property. We conduct site-specific investigations to evaluate issues such as high groundwater, seepage, or foundation settlement. The results of our hydrogeologic investigations are used by engineers, developers, attorneys and property owners to make informed decisions about drainage or mitigation approaches.

Public Water Supply Development & Groundwater Exploration

We help communities, municipalities, and organizations secure reliable groundwater sources. Our hydrogeologists have extensive experience siting, designing, and testing public water supply wells across Montana. From exploration and well siting to aquifer testing, permitting, and source-water delineations (PWS-6), we guide projects through each stage to meet DNRC, DEQ, and other regulatory requirements. We also apply the same expertise to non-PWS groundwater development needs for clients including ranches, industry, and private developers.

Aquifer Testing & Hydrogeologic Characterization

Aquifer testing is a key tool for hydrogeologic site characterization and decision-making. We design and oversee aquifer tests that meet DNRC, DEQ, or other project or agency requirements, and we analyze the results using state-of-the-practice analytical methods and software. Our evaluations help determine aquifer properties, well performance, and aquifer behavior over time. In addition to aquifer testing, our hydrogeologists perform broader site characterization ranging from desktop reviews of geologic and hydrologic data to exploratory drilling programs, water-quality sampling, and detailed interpretation of hydrogeologic conditions.

Groundwater Modeling & Data Analysis

Our team develops both analytical and numerical (MODFLOW) groundwater models to evaluate aquifer response under a variety of scenarios. Modeling applications include well interference and well field optimization, construction dewatering, stream depletion, and long-term aquifer management. These tools help clients and regulators understand potential effects of pumping, recharge, or development, and support sound, defensible decisions.

Environmental Investigations & Remediation

We apply our hydrogeologic experience to investigations and cleanup of groundwater and soil contamination throughout Montana. Projects have included CERCLA and RCRA sites, leaking underground storage tank (UST/LUST) sites, remedial investigations and feasibility studies, and site cleanups under EPA and DEQ programs. We also perform soil and water-quality sampling, interpretation, and reporting to meet regulatory requirements. For municipalities and private clients, we support permitting and design of land-application disposal (LAD) systems and other groundwater-related environmental solutions.

Hydrogeology Services for Legal & Expert Work

We provide expert hydrogeologic analysis and testimony in support of litigation, pre-litigation evaluations, water-rights proceedings, and regulatory and permitting reviews. Our work includes aquifer testing and hydrogeologic evaluations, stream-depletion and groundwater–surface water interaction analyses, property damage investigations, and other site-specific hydrogeologic assessments. With decades of experience in Montana and a record of providing clear, defensible opinions, our hydrogeologists support attorneys, private clients, insurance companies, and others who require expert hydrogeologic services for groundwater-related disputes or regulatory matters.

Mining & Energy Hydrogeology

HydroSolutions supports mining and energy clients with baseline hydrogeologic investigations, permitting, and ongoing monitoring. Our work includes groundwater-supply studies, dewatering plans, and contaminant fate and transport evaluations. We combine field data with hydrogeologic analysis to meet permitting requirements and address complex hydrogeologic settings.

Technical Support for Water Rights

Our hydrogeologists provide technical analyses in support of water-rights applications, changes, and contested cases. Services include aquifer testing, stream depletion evaluations, technical hydrogeologic evaluations, and expert opinions. (For details on our legal and permitting services, see our Water Rights page.)
